A man’s attempt to sue Newport Council over a long-lost hard drive that contained Bitcoin was rejected by a UK court judge. Early adopter of Bitcoin, computer engineer James Howells mined about 7,500 Bitcoin in 2009. After that, he forgot about it, and in 2013, his ex-partner disposed of the hard drive that held the Bitcoin wallet. Since then, the price of Bitcoin has skyrocketed, and it is estimated that there are currently $598 million worth of Bitcoin on the hard drive.

But now, Newport Council requested in the most recent hearing that the court dismiss Howells’ lawsuit, which sought compensation of £495 million ($601 million) or the right to access the landfill. Judge Keyser KC, however, dismissed the case stating that there was “no realistic prospect of succeeding if it went to trial.”
